We are happy to announce our roaster partnership with award winning Rishi Tea. Mattie’s Roastery, LLC has accepted the distibutorship for the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States for Rishi Tea. We will be supplying all of your local coffeehouses and retail venues with fresh, high quality Rishi Tea. www.rishi-tea.com

Our current offerings include many of your favorites: Earl Grey, China Breakfast, Sencha, Jasmine Green, Green Tea Mint, Peach Blossom White, Scarlet Herbal, Tangerine Ginger Herbal.

Virginia Specialty Coffee Roaster

How I came to be a Virginia Coffee Roaster…info for our curious clients about the history of Mattie’s Mountain Mud. I started working in the coffee business as a dishwasher/bus-gal at the age of 17. I moved up quickly to barista and weekend manager. As soon as I fired my first batch of green beans, I had the coffee bug in a really, really good way.

I worked for several specialty coffeehouses throughout the mid-atlantic region and settled in Lewisburg, West Virginia for my first coffee house. I purchased a closed general store and revamped the location into a sweet little hub filled with light, joy and love…and oh yeah, lots of fresh roasted coffees.

After three years, we moved to a bigger location just down the street with the help of a great community! We had a separate room for roasting and thus began our wholesaling and shipping career. Eleven years after we opened our doors, we sold the storefront to a wonderful couple and it is now the beloved Wild Bean.

I then moved the roaster to our family farm in Virginia. We renovated the old machine shed where I had watched my husband care for his grandfather’s jubilee tractor. It is beautiful here…looking out at the mountains and biking from home to the roasting facility.

Today I am proud to be a Virginia specialty coffee roaster. I love supplying all of our wholesale locations and sending boxes of fresh roasted coffees to our clients across the United States of America. Today we are shipping organic, fair-trade certified, rainforest alliance certified coffees to Indiana, Florida, Wisconsin, and The Commonwealth of Virginia. Thank you for supporting us all these years. We look forward to many more!

New River Rendezvous

We are among the proud sponsors of the this year’s annual New River Rendezvous. Helmed by the New River Alliance of Climbers, the ‘Vous is a fundraising event that is run solely by volunteers and aims to provide new amenities to the trails and parks of the area. With climbing, clinics, great food, beer, coffee and music, it’s also a hair-raisin’, knee-slappin’ good time.

As Tennessee’s first legal moonshine distillery, Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery uses Tennessee-grown corn and converts it into clear corn liquor right before your very eyes at their storefront in Gatlinburg. Choose from a variety of moonshines, including Apple Pie and Moonshine Cherries. Also available at this now-famous distillery (they’ve even been featured on NBC’s The Today Show) are an array of moonshine-infused culinary concoctions with that East Tennessee regional flair: Pineapple Salsa, White Lightnin’ Pickles… oh yeah, and you can get Mattie’s Mountain Mud Moonshine (the coffee blend, not the alcohol), Smoky Mountain Roast & Southern Pecan, too!

Here at Mattie’s Roastery, we do as much as we can to preserve this precious earth that provides so bountifully for us. This Earth Day 2011, it seems appropriate to share our practices with you, and some of the ways that you can continue the chain of kindness…

*We buy organic, shadegrown, small-farmed, fair trade, sustainable coffees from cooperatives who value the earth.
*We recycle everything…and compost everything else. We strive to be a no-waste facility.
*We use all organic cleaning products.
*We participate in a number of certification programs, and have added our own initiative, Above & Beyond: for trees & seeds & magical coffee dreams.
*We reuse burlap coffee sacks for garden mulch, artwork, and *coming soon!* reusable shopping bags.
*We compost coffee chaff and any beans that drop on the floor.
*We use compostable coffee bags with corn-based polymer lining, which is biodegradable.
*We bike or walk to work! We go to town (about 10 minutes away) about once a month to stock up on a few things from IGA. Otherwise, we get our food from our farm, where the roastery is also located. Very, very little gas is used.
*We save all heirloom seeds and grow all our own food (except grains.)
*We harvest seedling trees from the forest daily. We grow them out for clients.
*We use compostable cups without lids for special events.
*Coming soon! We will be offering artisan mugs from local potters with our logo.
*We are transferring all of our physical marketing materials to green (recycled, compostable.)
*The roastery is located on a 700 acre working tree farm with the national forest on three sides. We are surrounded by wildlife and always participating in wildlife-friendly projects.
*We will be sponsors for the upcoming 9th Annual New River Rendezvous, a no-waste event.

Welcome to the new Mattie’s Mountain Mud website & blog! I’m so very happy to be here on this lovely April morning, sippin’ on a mug of our best brew. Spring is springing here on the farm, the grass is greening and the snowdrops are bowing to the springtime sun. I saw my first kingfisher on my way to the roastery this morning, and there was a brave tree frog gracing the roastery door. I feel very honored and blessed to be supported by so many wonderful coffee farmers, proprietors of coffeehouses and grocers, and excellent drinkers of our brew. Please take a look around the new site, and let me know what you think. I look forward to serving you the finest coffees this earth has to offer for many years to come…
